Retired world traveler always show up here in December

15 minutes with Old Man Bluffton.

Note from Icon: Old Man Bluffton, retired and now world traveler, shows up in Bluffton briefly each December. If he’s in the mood, he allows the Icon to interview him.

Earlier this week the Icon met him in Twisted Whisk and he was in the mood – although the Icon bought the coffee. Here’s a paraphrase of our conversation.

At Riley Creek Baptist Church

Riley Creek Baptist Church, 4950 Township Road 27, Bluffton, invites the public to its Christmas program, “The Advent of Emmanuel,” at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 17.

The program will consist of a play telling the story of “Lydie” as she comes to understand the true meaning of Christmas, along with a number of musical selections and parts for children of the congregation.  Everyone is welcome.  For more information call 419-326-6361.

The second edition of “Bridge: The Bluffton University Literary Journal” is now live.

Delay at the publishing house - book expected in January; pre-sale orders still available

“Everyone who pre-orders a book as a Christmas gift will receive a card stating the book is on its way after Christmas,” said Steiner. “That way, the gift-giver has something to present on Christmas morning.”

Production issues have delayed the printing of the Icon’s book “The Bluffton We Never Knew,” according to Fred Steiner.

Berch Carpenter, recently retiring member of the Bluffton Tree Commission, was recognized at the Dec. 11 Bluffton council meeting.

Mayor Judy Augsburger presented Carpenter with a plaque reading: "In grateful appreciation of your 10-plus years of service and dedication to the Bluffton Community Village Tree Commmission."

The mayor said that Nancy Benroth was recently appointed as Carpenter's replacement.

Laura Strahan, a Bluffton High School senior, is the Icon's student artist of the month. Laura has enrolled in Art 1, Design 1, Design 2. Her college plans are undecided.

Describing the art project in the photo, Laura says: "It was a watercolor painting of a drawing I did of a dragon at the top of a waterfall with mountains in the background.

"I don't think watercolor is my best medium - had not had much experience - but I felt like I got better at it and enjoyed it more as I did the project."

Students in Bluffton schools appear to be learning faster than those in almost every other school system in the nation.

That fact is evident in new data from Stanford University.

It's New Leaf all decked out for the holidays

One of Ada's "must-see" business displays is indoors.

It's at New Leaf Lawn Garden Center, 0395 State Route 235, Ada. The retail area is transformed into a winter wonderland of holiday decorations.

This year the New Leaf staff created a charming holiday feeling in the store. And, of course, their decorating ideas are for customers to purchase and place in their own homes.

The Icon shares several photos for viewers, plus a short video.
