Clean up week May 18-21
Village of Bluffton clean up week is Monday to Thursday, May 18-21, according to Jesse Blackburn, village administrator.

Dumpsters will be placed at the Bluffton recycle center on Spring Street during this period.

Teacher Appreciation Week was May 4-8. In cooperation with the Bluffton PTO, the Icon is posting drawings of elementary teachers created by elementary students. Henrietta Kaiser, first grader, created this drawing of her teacher, Mrs. Huffman.

Here's today's installment of the Bluffton High School Class of 2020 Senior Spotlight. Each weekday until the end of May the Icon will feature photos and future plans for four BHS seniors.  Students will be featured in a four-set random order. 

Jane Shaw announces the spring opening of R COOP, located at 2168 Road R, two miles north of Bluffton.

The shop’s first weekend opening details follow: 

Friday, May 15

10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We have some great decorative, farmstead and vintage items to put in and outside your home to enjoy,” said Shaw. 

“Most are one of a kind. Once gone, they won’t be available again.

R COOP will be open each Friday and Saturday from this weekend through the weekend of June 12-13.

Ohio's personal care services such as hair salons, barbershops, day spas, nail salons, and tanning facilities may reopen on Friday, May 15, according to Gov. Mike DeWine.

Four area students graduated from Ohio State University Lima with associate of art degrees this month. They include:

Was a Master PGA golf professional for over 50 years

Larry Shute, 88, former owner of Bluffton Golf Club from 1971 to 1989, died May 3, 2020, in Bayside Nursing Home, Pensacola, Florida. For several years he was also golf coach at Bluffton College. He was born in Cleveland to Herman and Bernice Shute. 

Bluffton police K9 suffers from a collapsed lung

And, now for some good news.

Kato, Bluffton police department’s K9, is chomping at the bit to return to work, according to Tyler Hochstetler, member of the department and his handler.

Currently on sick leave, the dog showed signs of an illness in March.

“I took him to the vet because of his lethargic state,” Hochstetler wrote in a letter to Bluffton council on March 27. “ The physician's exam, blood work and X-ray concluded that Kato is suffering from a pneumothorax (collapsed lung).

This week, Hochstetler told the Icon that Kato is doing well. 

Rev. Edward E. Gorsuch, 92, died on Saturday, May 9, 2020, at the Hilty Mennonite Home in Pandora.  

He was the surviving younger son of Charles and Mildred (Frock) Gorsuch. Born on July 21, 1927, he grew up on his family farm near Springfield, Ohio. He graduated from Otterbein College in Westerville, in 1948. While in college, he met Alice C. Garton, with whom he has been married for 72 years.  

Ed completed his studies at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky. He entered the ministry and served for over 60 years.
