Two Beavers win Heartland honors

Softball

Junior shortstop Caylin Morstadt (Delaware/Rutherford B. Hayes) has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Hitter of the Week.

Morstadt led Bluffton with a .478 batting average as the Beavers went 2-6 over their final eight games in Florida last week. The junior finished with team highs of 11 hits, 10 runs, a .783 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage. 

Alex Sider shares Christian ethics presentation

Dr. Alex Sider, professor of religion at Bluffton University, will present the Colloquium “Nothing About Us Without Us: Some Biopsychology Implications of Intellectual Disability for Christian Ethics” at 4 p.m. on Friday,  March 15, in Centennial Hall’s Stutzman Lecture Hall.

This event is free and open to the public.

Telling difficult stories: reporting on sexual violence

Marie Osborne, anchor and reporter for WJR Radio in Detroit, will share “Telling Difficult Stories: Reporting on Sexual Violence,” during Bluffton University’s annual Women’s Studies Forum on Tuesday, March 19. The lecture begins at 11 a.m. in Bluffton’s Yoder Recital.

During the presentation, Osborne will describe the challenges of investigating stories off the beaten track such as her reporting on the sexual assault of female inmates in Michigan prisons.

Men return from Florida at 5-6; women stand 2-8

Bluffton University baseball and softball teams are in Florida during spring break. Here’s a summary of their recent contests:

FORT MYERS, Fla - The Bluffton University baseball team knocked off Thiel 11-8 on March 7, in their seventh game of the Gene Cusic Classic. Bluffton improved to 3-4 on the season, while Thiel stands at 2-3. 

“Of Bronze and Bravery”

Exhibit highlights the Bluffton University experience during WWI

Through artwork, letters and scrapbooks, Bluffton University archivist and 1999 graduate Carrie Phillips is sharing the unique history of Bluffton during and after World War I.

Phillips developed the exhibit “Of Bronze and Bravery” as a complement to “Voices of Conscience,” the traveling Kauffman Museum exhibit on display at Bluffton’s Musselman Library.

The two exhibits highlight the differing experiences of Mennonites during the Great War Era.

University softball team wins another one in Florida

PLANT CITY, Fla. - The Bluffton University softball squad picked up on Wednesday where they left off Monday as they added another win to their record in a dominating 10-2 victory over Simmons in six innings. In game two, they revisited Saint Joseph's (Me.) and nearly exacted some revenge, but came up just short as the Beavers lost a hard fought game by the score of 7-6. Bluffton now stands 2-4 overall with two more days of action from Florida.
