On Sunday, March 19 at 1:30 p.m., the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District will offer Stories in the Woods at McLean Teddy Bear Park-Wheeler Shelter, 2004 N. Dixie Hwy. Lima.

Registration is open for July 15 Ride to Remember

CORRECTION: Organizers are planning for 275 riders with cinch sacks available for that number of registered riders.

The ninth Annual Ride to Remember, a Bluffton Lions fundraising event for cyclists of all ages and abilities, is now taking registrations for the Saturday, July 15 event. When you ride, you help Bluffton build more bike and pedestrian pathways. (Register HERE.)

The in-person ride will take cyclists through the Village of Bluffton, Ohio and the surrounding countryside. Routes include four marked loops. Distances range from 11-124 miles.

The first 275 registered riders to check in will receive a cinch sack filled with items from local businesses and a lunch coupon. In 2022, the cinch sack value was close to $200. A commemorative T-shirt will be offered for purchase during registration.

Invitation to March 15 Transportation Improvement Plan Open House

The Lima-Allen County Regional Planning Commission is hosting a Transportation Improvement Plan Open House on March 15 from 2:00- 6:00 p.m. at 130 W. North St. in Lima.

The Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) is a list of upcoming federally funded transportation projects completed every four years in cooperation with our member political subdivisions and ODOT.

Early BHS sports history presentation, March 13

“Before we were Pirates,” the story of Bluffton sports teams before 1929, is the topic of a presentation by Fred Steiner, Monday, March 13, at the Bluffton Senior Citizens Center, 132 N. Main St., Bluffton.

The presentation will follow a noon luncheon and should begin at 12:45 p.m. You do not need to attend the luncheon to attend the presentation, which is open to the public.

The Pirate did not become the school mascot until 1929. Prior to that the school had no mascot. Steiner's presentation shares details of the earliest teams in the history of the school. The origin of the mascot will also be explained.

Soccer Field prep needs volunteers Saturday, March 11

As the Icon recently reported, some 300 children participate in Bluffton youth soccer. This weekend volunteers will be preparing fields for the spring season.

GROB apprenticeship tours wrap up on March 11

GROB, a European manufacturer of high-quality production systems and universal machining centers that is located in Bluffton, has one more apprenticeship tour left before applications close on April 2.

The tour is from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 11. 

This event features a presentation about the program, Q&A with training staff and a facility tour led by current apprentices. Registration is required as spots are limited.
