Winslow Homer postage stamp

Here's the latest postage stamp soon to be available from the Bluffton post office. On Aug. 12, the U.S. Postal Service will pay tribute to Winslow Homer, an American artist honoring his works with the issuance of a commemorative stamp.

The stamp, which is the ninth in the American Treasures series, features Boys in a Pasture, an 1874 oil-on-canvas painting by Homer.

Joan Lewis created this plate to fit here 2000 Buick Regal. She eventually traded in the car, but kept the plate.

The Beaverdam-Richland Fire and Rescue Department will be holding its 56th annual festival from 4 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 14, at the fire station in Beaverdam.

This is the department's annual fundraiser. Proceeds go toward upgrading equipment and vehicles that the department and community rely on.

Due to the charitable donations of several local businesses there will be free rides for children.

Also, there will be homemade food and a live band, raffle tickets, Bingo and other fun activities for family entertainment.

For the fifth year out of the past six, financial-services firm Edward Jones ranks highest in investor satisfaction with full-service brokerage firms, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Full Service Investor Satisfaction Study.

The announcement was made by Ron Michel and Mark Alliman, Edward Jones financial advisors, who have offices on Main Street in Bluffton.

The study measures overall investor satisfaction will full service investment firms based on seven factors:

The Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) and First National Bank are reminding community bank customers of the stability of the community banking industry as the nation recovers from the recent financial and economic crisis.

"Community bank customers may be worried about the safety of their deposits during this time of continued economic instability," said Todd Mason, President/CEO of First National Bank.
