Eight swimmers from Bluffton schools qualified for the Great Lakes YMCA Zones Swimming Championship March 18-20, 2022 at the C.T. Banin Natatorium and Canton McKinley High School.

Jenna Downey, Camden Verb and Riley Verb swim for the Putnam County YMCA swim team under assistant coach, Bob Verb of Bluffton. Jackson Bowlus, Allison Diller, Kari Diller, Xavier Diller and Madelyn Sterrett swim for the Lima YMCA swim team coached by April Dorman of Bluffton. In the summer, they all swim for the Bluffton Sardines.

This weekend Blufftonite Trevor Bassitt is competing in the Men's 400 meters in the World Athletics Indoor Championships Belgrade 22. The Bluffton Athletic Boosters Facebook page has tipped us off that he is advancing to the semifinals.

On Saturday, March 12, Southgate Lanes awarded recognition to the top bowlers in the Junior Bowling program which ran from November 2021-March 2022. The bowling alley at 9700 Dixie Hwy. hosted an awards banquet for some 90 youth bowlers and their families, including free pizza and soft drinks.

Owners Derek Dukes and Brandon Falk presented certificates and trophies to the Hot Shot League, Early Bird League, winners of the Ethan Leiber Scholarships (founded by Scott and Angie Leiber), team awards, and Adult/Junior Scotch Doubles awards.

The Bluffton University baseball team finished off its spring break trip with a 5-3 victory over Rockford University in Ft. Meyers, FL. The Beavers improved to 3-6 on the season while the Regents dropped to 3-3.

Bluffton High School senior wrestler Kaden Basil competed in the third-place match of the Div. III state championship tournament Sunday, March 13, in the 175 lbs. division.

Basil lost that bout to Waynedale senior Peyton Lemon by technical fall 20-5 to finish fourth in the double-elimination tournament at the Schottenstein Center on the Ohio State University campus in Columbus.

Basil registered a 3-2 record at the three-day event to finish his season with a record of 41-7. Lemon concluded his campaign 31-2 after finishing third.

Bluffton High School senior wrestler Kaden Basil advanced to the consolation round semifinals of the Div. III state championship tournament in the 175 lbs. division Saturday, March 12.

Basil posted a 2-1 record in the double-elimination event over the first two days of the three-day event at the Schottenstein Center on the Ohio State campus in Columbus to run his record to 40-6 this season. 

In the consolation semifinals Sunday morning, Basil will square off against West Jefferson senior Bryce Keckley (56-3).
