Dr. Groman - for 25 years - "Can you read the letters on the bottom line?"

Without fanfare on April 6, Darrell Groman will mark his 25th anniversary of opening an optometric practice in Pandora.

He might pause between patients, ranging from age 4 to 84, to eat some cake and reflect upon the past quarter century of offering vision care which began in the rural village of population 1,000 on the first Wednesday of April in 1986.

Transylvania offense too much for Beavers in series opener (baseball)

The Bluffton University baseball team traveled to Transylvania University to take on the Pioneers in a Heartland Conference matchup on Friday, April 1, 2011. The Beavers fell behind 12-0 after the second inning as Transylvania took game one of the HCAC series by a final score of 20-11.

What was it like growing up close to the lake? Did you spend summer days at the beach?

I actually grew up in Coldwater which is a smaller town close to Celina. It was really no different than any other small town. We never really went to the lake unless it was a special occasion and someone had a boat. When I was young we just rode our bicycles to the town swimming pool. Once I was in high school I had band and worked most of the time. So, nothing really special.

Fred's diary for April 1 -So, I'm minding my own business, heading toward the chamber office on a Friday morning. Thought I'd stop at the corner of Main and Cherry and pick up a cup of Icon coffee to go.

The usuals were there. Except Eric Rummel was AWOL. Alison King and I exchange a quick dose of Bluffton slander and libel. Could be argued that it was straight gossip; it was all the truth.

Conversations ranged from how many time her brother, Ben, calls or texts her in a week, to the best coupons currently offered and why people go for them.

March 2011 wetter than normal

March 2011 was wetter than normal for the third month of the year, weather-wise. Guy Verhoff, Pandora weather observer, provided the following March weather summary to The Icon.

The total rain precipitation was 3.14 inches. The total snow precipitation was 3.8 inches. That compares to the normal March average precipitation of 2.71 inches.

The average March 2011 temperature was 37.8 degrees. The normal March average is 37.5 degrees. The average maximum temperature was 46.5 degrees; the average minimum was 29.1 degrees

Longsworth pitches complete game for BHS softball

After being tied 4-4 Ottawa-Glandorf scored 2 runs in the final innings to defeat Bluffton HS girls in softball 6-4 on March 31. Kala Longsworth pitched the complete game for the Lady Pirates.
