Barbara Plaugher tells about Haiti trip Feb. 8; flu clinic Feb. 2 at Sr. Center

Barbara Plaugher will speak to the Bluffton Senior Citizens about her recent trip to Haiti and the earthquake she and her group experienced, according to Tonya Meyer, director.

Her talk will be at noon, Monday, Feb. 8, during the Center's monthly potluck. Hostesses for the meal are Ruth Bartels and friends. Basil Meyer is the master of ceremonies.

Two members who become 90 will be presented with a life membership at the potluck. They are Leland Lehman and Harley Childs.

Greg's Pharmacy offers free osteoporosis and blood pressure checks Feb. 13

An osteoporosis screening and blood pressure checks is planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13, at Greg's Pharmacy, Bluffton.

The free service is provided by Ohio Northern Univeristy's National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) student chapter.

"Bone density scans provided by pharmacy interns will help determine if you are at risk for osteoporosis," said Greg Conkling, of the Bluffton pharmacy.

James K. Warren 1938-2010

James K. Warren

James K. Warren, 71, Bluffton, died at 2:08 a.m., Jan. 30, 2010, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima. He was born July 12, 1938, in Orange Township, Hancock County, to Clyde and Eulalia McCormick Warren. On June 3, 1960, he married Jeanette James and she survives.

Mr. Warren was a life-long farmer and former auctioneer. He was a member of the Bluffton Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. He also served on boards of the Blanchard Valley Farmers Cooperative and the Hancock County Soil and Water Conservation District.

David Eugene Long 1942-2010 was postmaster of Beaverdam

David Eugene Long, 67, of Beaverdam, Ohio, died Jan. 30, 2010 at his residence. He was born Oct. 3, 1942, in Lima to Rolland and Dorothy Hanthorn Long. He married Carol Bartels on Oct. 17, 1988, and she survives.

He retired from Fruehauf, Delphos. He had been the Beaverdam postmaster and served on the Beaverdam council. He also owned a video store in Beaverdam.

In addition to his wife, survivors are a half-brother, Jack Hanthorn, Middlepoint, and two step-sons Nick (Debby) Kloeppel, Lima and Adam (Libby) Kloeppel, Lima.

Heroes or mentors?

Every young child has his or her hero -- often a celebrity. That's okay...everyone needs a chance to dream. But at some point those heroes get moved to the back burner and a more realistic mentor/hero takes his or her place.

Well, perhaps just the Bluffton Senior Citizens annual winter garage sale. The sale started on Friday and concludes Saturday. The Senior Center on North Main Street is lined with tables of all sorts of items ready to be purchased and taken home. Here is a scene from the event on Friday.
