The Bluffton University men’s basketball hit the road on Wednesday, Feb. 6, and they defeated the Manchester University Spartans, 65-52, in a Heartland Conference battle.

The Beavers improved to 10-12 and 6-9 in HCAC play, while the Spartans dropped to 4-18 and 1-14 in HCAC play. Bluffton's win was crucial as it pulled the Beavers into a tie with Mount St. Joseph for the sixth and final spot in the upcoming HCAC tournament.

The Beavers also moved a game ahead of Anderson after the Ravens fell at Hanover.

Bluffton welcomed Manchester University to the Sommer Center on Wednesday, Feb. 6, looking to improve their record to 11-11 on the season.

Strong performances from Lauren Hutton (New Riegel), Brenna Kurilec (Mt. Gilead/Gilead Christian) and Taylor Knight (Perrysburg) helped the home team do just that as Bluffton pulled away late to beat the Spartans, 57-49.

The victory helped Bluffton (6-9 HCAC) pull within a game of both Manchester and Rose-Hulman for the fifth and sixth slots in the upcoming HCAC tournament.

Janis S. Gipson, 65, died at 4:53 p.m. Feb. 5, 2013, at Shawnee Manor Nursing Home.

She was born Nov. 9, 1947, in Hippo, Ky., to Raleigh and Trilbie Laferty Ousley, who preceded her in death. On Oct. 14, 1984, she married Bryson Gipson Sr., who survives in Lima.

Mrs. Gipson had been a nurse's aide at Lima Manor Nursing Home. She was a member of Mount Zion Old Regular Baptist Church, McGuffey.

Miss Ohio, Elissa McCracken, visited Mr. Amstutz's class at Bluffton Middle School and gave a presentation on cyber-bullying.  She answered many intriguing questions before asking students to paint their pinky fingers blue and 'pinky swear' to help end cyber-bullying. Arthur Clase Immele, 98, of Tiffin, died Friday morning, Feb. 1, 2013, at St. Francis Home, Tiffin.

He was born Jan. 19, 1915, in Tiffin, to Joseph A. and Mary P. (Ross) Immele. He married Marian B. Kamp Sept. 4, 1937.

Survivors include one son, Robert "Bob" Immele of Glendale, Ariz.; two daughters, Margaret "Peg" (Ed) Murphy of Bluffton, and Martha (Ernie) Boyer of Lima; son-in-law, Kandy Matthew Cameron of Tiffin; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Paul Baransy will conduct Bluffton University’s Jazz Ensemble and Concert Band in the annual winter instrumental concert, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in Yoder Recital Hall.

The concert is free and open to the public; a free-will offering will be taken during intermission for music scholarships.
