University speaker to examine race, discipleship March 25
Dr. Brian Bantum, an assistant professor of theology at Seattle Pacific University and Seminary, will address the question “Discipleship: What’s Race Got to Do with It?” in a Bluffton University forum on Tuesday, March 25. Free and open to the public, the event will begin at 11 a.m. in Bluffton’s Founders Hall.
“American society continues to struggle with the significance of race and racial difference,” Bantum notes. Many people hope for a “post-racial” society, he adds, but he asks if that is possible and “consonant with Christian hope.” He will offer a theological analysis of race and its significance for the church and for the lives of those who are disciples of Christ.
Bantum is the author of the 2010 book, “Redeeming Mulatto: A Theology of Race and Christian Hybridity,” a theological interpretation of interracial bodies and Christian life. He and his wife, the Rev. Gail Song Bantum, live in Seattle with their three sons.
