A common Buckeye butterfly shows off its upside-down perching ability on a butterfly bush in Bluffton. This butterfly with a bold pattern of eyespots and white bars on the upper wing is a familiar site in Bluffton this month. It is thought that the eyespots serve to startle or distract predators, especially young birds.
