BFR announces ambitious fundraising goal for 2011

The BFR board of directors has set a goal of $25,000 for the 2011 annual campaign. According to the Director Carole Enneking, "This goal amount is a lofty one, but will allow us to make some very important upgrades to the facility."

A Power Point attachment at the bottom of this story explains the campaign in greater detail.

Projects on the list include:

o adding a cable crossover, power rack and low row machine in the fitness center, plus,
o replacing lighting with energy efficient fixtures, and
o making roof repairs.

Individual and corporate donations are welcome to meet the fund raising goal, according to Enneking.

Bluffton Family Recreation has a grass-roots history in Bluffton. It was concerned citizens who worked to bring sport and recreational programming to the community.

BFR is a private, non-profit organization that operates on collected fees and donations only, no tax dollars or federal funding is received.

It took years of fundraisers and community support to facilitate the building of the Snider Road facility in 1995 and even more support for the expansion of the facility in 2000.

Part of the mission of BFR is to offer affordably priced programs and memberships. With careful financial management by its board, BFR has become more self-supporting but still needs assistance in making major upgrades.

The building is now showing signs of wear and upgrades are long overdue. BFR's fitness center started out in a 500-square-foot area in the original building.

The 2000 expansion provided a much larger workout area (1,200 square feet) with new equipment. Since 2000, new treadmills and elliptical trainers have been purchased and several benches for the strength area.

This year's goal will add a very versatile cable crossover unit.

"The cable crossover has been the most requested item for the fitness center and will allow for more varied workouts using the adjustable cables for upper and lower body exercises," according to Enneking.

The Power Rack will replace a smaller squat rack to provide a safer lifting environment.

The low row attachment to the cable crossover will add an additional seated piece of equipment that can be used by individuals of all ages to strengthen core muscles as well as arms.

The lighting project is in conjunction with AEP's current rebate program. By replacing the current fluorescent and mercury-vapor lights with more energy efficient versions, BFR will not only be a more environmentally-friendly facility, but also will save money on utility costs.

"As a non-profit agency, any cost savings will free funds to invest more into the facility," said Enneking.

Upgraded lighting in the gymnasium and arena will increase the level of light during the many sport leagues and tournaments.

The final part of this year's project is to make repairs in the roof structure. The roof areas of the gymnasium and arena see occasional leaks during heavy storms resulting in wet insulation and the potential for mold build up.
