Pauline Hirschler

Pauline Hirschler will turn 100 years old on Dec. 20, 2011. A family celebration will be held Dec. 17.

Pauline Marie Lutz was born in Lima to Alarta and Tymah Fay Roush Lutz. She earned a two-year teaching certificate from Bowling Green and taught for two years in a one-room schoolhouse in Allen County and then at Horace Mann Elementary School in Lima.

Rose-Hulman used an 11-2 run over the final four minutes of the game to knock off Bluffton University 66-55 on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011. Bluffton's third straight loss dropped the Beavers to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the Heartland Conference, while Rose improved to 7-1 on the season with a spotless 3-0 mark in the HCAC.

The Bluffton University women's basketball team rallied to take a 45-42 lead with 8:21 to play before Rose-Hulman went on a 19-4 run for a 61-49 victory over the Beavers on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011. Bluffton slipped to 2-5 overall and 0-3 in the Heartland Conference, while Rose (1-5, 1-2 HCAC) picked up its first win of the season.

Bluffton council okayed 2012 appropriations on Monday, which total approximately $6.2 million. The largest expense is a projected $1.4 million water improvement project that will take place only if village voters approve a one-quarter percent income tax on the spring primary.

If voters say "yes" then the village will proceed with the replacement of water lines on the South Lawn-Grove Street area, Sunset Drive and Geiger Street. The one-quarter income tax would be taken off once the project is paid for.

You can't swim in the Bluffton Community Swimming Pool today, but you can buy a 2012 swimming pass at a reduced rate now until Dec. 31.

Passes purchased in December receive a 10 percent discount (does not apply to a $5 charge for additional children*). The 2012 pool prices follow:

$40 - senior single
$75 - senior couple
$80 - single
$130 - family pass (2 adults and up to 3 children ages 18 in the same household) *Additional passese for children agesa 18 and under can be purchased for $5 each.
