There’s something about reptiles.

That something was captured Wednesday at Bluffton Senior Center during an Our Version of Adult Learning (OVAL) program.

Daniel Hodges, naturalist with the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District, brought some of the district’s cold-blooded creatures to an appreciative audience at the center.

“These are some of my favorite animals,” Hodges told his audience. Those favorites included a bearded dragon lizard, snapping turtle, red-eared slider turtle, box turtle, brown snake and a corn snake.

He also showed a turtle egg and a larger snapping turtle shell and head, to demonstrate the reptile’s bite.

The Ohio natives in the program included the snapping turtle, box turtle and brown snake.

Some of the additional details Hodges shared with the OVAL audience included that the brown snake, which will never get larger than its current size recently gave birth to 19 babies.

The snapper weights 10 pounds and is a bit overweight. The corn snake, measuring between 5 and 6 feet enjoys meals of mice and other rodents. And, that turtles can live to be as old as 90.

The next OVAL is at 10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, when Duane Bollenbacher presents a program of math and logic. At 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 29, Lynn Miller will talk about his book “The Power of Enough: Finding Contentment.”

These programs are free and open to the public.
