Pirate boys finish 8th in 15-team Ayersville meet

Tuesday tri-meet with Ft. Jennings and Ada

DEFIANCE - The Bluffton track and field teams competed at the 18-school Diller Invitational hosted by Defiance Ayersville Saturday.

The Pirate boys came in eighth out of 15 squads. Columbus Grove captured the boys title with 140.33 points to beat Minster by 12 points. Bluffton tallied 33 points.

Liberty Center took first in the girls team standings with 124 points as Minster again captured second (113). The Pirate girls took 15th out of 18 teams with nine points.

Ethan Bogart finished second in the 300 hurdles to post the top Pirate boys showing.

Brianna Taber ended up third in the pole vault to register the best Lady Pirate individual result.

Bluffton competes in a triangular meet at Ada with Ft. Jennings on Tuesday, April 27. The Pirates then compete at the Liberty-Benton Invitational Saturday, May 1.

Pirate boys lanced by Lincolnview
MIDDLE POINT - The visiting Bluffton baseball team was shut out 20-0 at state-ranked Lincolnview Friday evening in Northwest Conference play.

The Pirates dropped to 0-13 and 0-5 in the NWC with the defeat. The fifth-rated Lancer boys improved to 11-4 (3-0 NWC) with the victory. 

The five-inning, run-rule shortened game was postponed from Thursday.

The Lancers knocked out five doubles among their 18 hits.

Lincolnview jumped in front with three runs in the home half of the first inning. They built the lead to 7-0 after two frames, and pushed eight more runs across home plate in the third for a 15-0 bulge.

The Lancers added five more scores in the bottom of the fourth inning, and held the Pirates scoreless in the fifth to enact the 10-run rule. 

Senior shortstop/pitcher Tyson Shutler singled for the only Bluffton hit.     

Landon Price had three hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs for the Lancers. Dane Ebel doubled twice, singled, scored three runs and knocked in a pair.

Creed Jessee scored four runs as he doubled, singled and scored once. Carson Fox and Aaron Cavinder each hit 3-3. Cavinder collected three RBI on two doubles, while Fox drove in two runs.

Carson Bowen added a two-run single for Lincolnview.

Bluffton's scheduled game at non-league foe Ft. Jennings Wednesday, April 21 was snowed out.

The Pirates host Spencerville (2-12, 1-3 NWC) Monday, April 26 in Northwest Conference action.

Pirate netters edged by Archbold
BLUFFTON - The host Bluffton boys tennis team lost a close 3-2 battle to Archbold Friday evening.

Bluffton fell to 2-5 with the defeat.

Pirate junior Luke Shadle won over freshman Cameron Yoder 6-2, 6-3 at second singles.

Senior Grant Klingler defeated Archer freshman Aron Miller 6-4, 6-2 at number three singles to provide the other Bluffton win.

Archbold won at first singles and took both doubles matches in straight sets to capture the overall win.

The Pirates play at local rival Ada (5-6) Monday, April 26 at 5 p.m. Ada beat Celina 4-1 Saturday on the road.

Pirate girls speared by Lancers
MIDDLE POINT - Visiting Bluffton lost 11-1 at Lincolnview in a Northwest Conference softball matchup Friday evening.

The league game was postponed from Thursday.

The Lady Pirates fell to 2-10 and 1-4 in the NWC after the defeat. The first-place Lancer girls     improved to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the NWC with the five-inning, run-rule shortened victory. 

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second inning. Lincolnview plated five runs to take an early lead.

Bluffton scored its only run in the top of the fourth. But the Lady Lancers pushed across three runs in each of the fourth and fifth frames to put the game out of reach.         

Hannah Davis batted 2-2 with the lone Bluffton run batted in. Riley Busch, Sophie Bricker, Dyllan Worcester and Lauren Rhodes all singled for the Lady Pirates.

Addyson Stevens slapped two singles to lead the eight-hit Lancer attack. Destiny Coil smashed a home run. Andie Webb double din two runs while Zadra King hit a double and had one RBI.

Annie Mendenhall added an RBI single. Taylor Post earned the pitching win as the Lancers out-hit the Pirates, 8-6.

The Pirate girls host last-place Spencerville (1-12, 0-2 NWC) in league action Monday, April 26.
