The Bluffton Public Library is taking reservations for four history walks down Bluffton’s Main Street, showing how the business district appeared in 1950. The walks take place on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 4 and 5. Reservations are required.

Led by Fred Steiner, each walk will focus on nearly 35 storefronts and their business owners as they existed more than 70 years ago. The tours cover businesses and buildings on both sides of Main Street from Cherry Street to Elm Street.

Bluffton Presbyterian Church, 112 N Main, will host a Blessing of the Animals Event on the church lawn on Saturday morning, October 2.

Several activities will take place between 10 a.m. and noon as follows:

10 a.m.-noon: Meet & Greet Animals from Humane Society & SPCA of Hancock County; giveaways from local pet stores.

11 a.m. Blessing of the Animals Service (about 20 minutes).

11:30 a.m. Special giveaway drawing winner.

The visiting Bluffton volleyball team lost a three-setter at state-ranked Leipsic in a Northwest Conference match Tuesday evening.

The Lady Pirate record fell to 10-6 overall and 2-2 this season with the 25-16, 25-17, 25-16 defeat.

Fifth-ranked Leipsic improved to 14-1 overall and 5-1 in the NWC with the victory.

Senior Kylie Stackhouse led Bluffton with 11 kills. Freshman Ayla Grandey knocked down seven kills and made two blocks.

Senior setter Skyler Scoles dished out 14 assists and mustered up five digs.

The Ada boys soccer team lost at home 8-2 to state-ranked Northwest Conference rival Bluffton Tuesday night, September 28, at War Memorial Stadium.

The Bulldogs dropped to 3-5-3 overall and 0-2-1 in NWC play with the defeat. The Pirates, 10th in the Div. III state rankings, improved to 8-2 and 3-0 in the NWC with the win.

The six-time defending NWC champion Pirates have won 33 league matches in a row. 

L. Joan Deafendeffin, 90, of Bluffton went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 26, 2021 at ProMedica Charles & Virginia Hickman Hospital in Adrian, Michigan. Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend who was born on September 24, 1931 in Lima, Ohio to the late Elmer C. and Lorraine (Sauer) Michael.  She married Harold Dee Deafendeffin on August 6, 1950 and he passed away on December 28, 2006.

At the Septemberr 27 regular meeting of the Village of Bluffton council, council members passed a first reading of ordinance no. 08-21 "to enact a no parking zone on the southeasterly size of South Lawn Avenue from West College Avenue to Grove Street in the Village of Bluffton, Ohio."

Four council members voted for the ordinance, two against. Discussion included the use of Lawn by school buses in the morning and afternoon, as well as the difficulty of plowing the street when snow accumulation is heavy due to cars parking further from the curbs.

 

 

Bluffton University will celebrate Homecoming and Alumni Weekend 2021 on Friday, Oct. 1, and Saturday, Oct. 2.

Homecoming and Alumni Weekend events will be open to all alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents and friends of the university. Along with cheering on the Beaver football and volleyball teams, the university will host alumni and affinity gatherings, campus tours, food trucks, Beaver Tail-Gating and inflatables. The 2000 Beaver football team will be honored during halftime of the football game for their HCAC championship.

Cory-Rawson High School (CRHS) will begin homecoming celebrations at the October 1 football game against Arcadia, at Spike Berry Field, 3930 County Road 26, Rawson. The homecoming king and queen will be announced in a crowning ceremony at 6:15 p.m. The homecoming dance on October 2 is themed "A Night in Hollywood." The homecoming ceremony and dance are planned by the CRHS Student Council.

In 1963, Bob Dylan released the song Blowing in the Wind and it became an anthem for the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. His lyrics included “The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind….Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head and pretend that he just doesn’t see? The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind.” Bob Dylan is a prolific songwriter who continues to produce music. His latest album release was Rough And Rowdy Ways in 2020. Bob Dylan has won 10 Grammy Awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Mayor Richard Johnson has scheduled trick or treating in the Village of Bluffton for 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 28.
