Letters

Former Blufftonite Chris Hardesty here, now in New York. I don't recall what initially led me to the Icon a couple months ago, but I'm happy to have found it.

I check in every week or so and feel like I'm getting back in touch with the wonderful town I grew up in. I've enoyed the video of the band reunion, the blog post about the slaw cutters and the 15-minute Q&As. And (feel free to share this with your advertisers) I'm making a list of businesses I hope to hit-up whenever II make it back to town -- popcorn, coffee, Dough Hook...

I wish to respond to Bob Amstutz's letter. I am, first of all, a progressive, a liberal - someone who thinks neither are dirty words and someone who really sees the slow conservative drift to the right in the United States as something very unfortunate.

As managers for a senior citizen apartment building here in Bluffton, my wife and I are often approached by various organizations interested in helping out, or wondering what donations could be made to support our residents.

Of course we are always grateful for the interaction (as are our residents), and we normally direct these groups to some recurring effort such as Bingo, or food donations.

Editor,

I disagree with Wendy Chappell-Dick and think the progressives are going to ruin this country. Progressives believe that the government must be involved in all levels of reform. The existing constitution is outdated and must be made into a dynamic evolving instrument for social change, using scientific knowledge and the development of administrative bureaucracy.

Why is it that on years when we don't elect a president, voter turnout is so low? Voter understanding of state and local offices and candidates are often woefully inept. I say that because I hate my own ignorance when I stare at a list of people running for office and have no idea what I am voting for when I make that mark on the ballot.

We want to thank you for posting our articles, list, and map for the Community Garage Sale. I had a sale myself this year and heard people talking about getting their list and map from the Icon.

We, the Friends, appreciate all you do for the community of Bluffton and for the library. We also appreciate you telling us the date for next year's craft fair. We are looking forward to having our sale then.

Thank you,

Jan Potter
