Review by Robert McCool

It's been quite a few weeks since I've submitted a book review for the Icon. It's been quite a few weeks since I have had the motivation to read a new pop-fiction release. I’ve found myself returning to some classics: “East of Eden,” “Travels with Charley,” and even the more recent “Cloud Cuckoo Land.”

To:  Mayor Johnson, City Council Members, and Citizens of Bluffton, OH

I recently sent a letter to our mayor council members and also to the ICON, voicing concern about the thin blue line proposal.  At this time I would like to continue expressing my concern. While many of us oppose the painting of the street, we are not opposed to honoring our law enforcement community as a whole and our fallen officers, in particular.

The past week began with Bluffton High School's Ethan Bogart named as Ohio's Northwest Conference track athlete of the year and ended with a good number of  BHS athletes advancing to regional competition.

The Bluffton boys track and field team finished a strong second at the Div. III district meet on a warm Thursday, May 19, and Saturday, May 21, at Ada's War Memorial Stadium.

Columbus Grove won the boys team title with 148 points, while Bluffton came in second with 114.

Kalida captured the girls crown in a close battle with Van Buren. The Lady Pirates finished a solid sixth out of 18 teams.

Several Pirates posted top-four finishes to make it to the regional meet next week.

Imagine an out-of-control and fast-moving freight train colliding into the rear of a mixed passenger and freight train stopped at a station.

That scene describes Bluffton’s most horrific railroad accident and it happened here 130 years ago, in 1892.

The accident killed one person, and caused damages in today’s money amounting to nearly $800,000, almost forced the railroad out of business.

UPDATE: Gist has qualified for national compettition.

Bluffton University sophomore Desmond Gist (Detroit, Mich./Trenton) traveled to Alliance, Ohio, on Thursday, May 19, 2022 to compete in the 110 meter hurdles event at the Mount Union Last Chance Meet.

He put up a record-setting time for the university and as of 11 p.m. Thursday night, was tied for 18th in NCAA Division III competition. Over the next day or so that status can change.
